Dear Friends,
Chicago Park District fieldhouses, playgrounds, gardens and other facilities are the backbone of recreation for communities throughout the city. These structures support opportunities for us to discover, grow and achieve a greater quality of life through play. Whether it’s a renovated gymnasium floor or a new fieldhouse, addressing the needs and interests of each community is the cornerstone of our capital planning.
Over the past year, we’ve celebrated many successes in spite of the difficult financial climate. We completed more than 20 new, fully accessible playgrounds to accommodate children with disabilities and 10 elite fitness centers that offer residents even more opportunities to get active. We also dedicated the new artificial turf soccer field at Kilbourn Park, moving forward on our commitment to support the city’s rapidly growing interest in the sport. While the restoration of the Fountain of Time in Washington Park underscores the Chicago Park District’s commitment to preserving historical park treasures for generations to come.
Looking to the future, we will continue to invest in our parks with the support of public and private partnerships. Without the ongoing support of elected officials, advisory councils, corporations and private organizations who understand the importance of parks, many vital projects could not be accomplished.
Our upcoming endeavors will be guided by the Chicago Park District’s four core values: accessibility, fitness, environmental stewardship and partnerships. We will continue to raise our standards on new projects, including the Mount Greenwood Playground, DuSable Harbor Building and the Independence Park Bungalow Initiative which will demonstrate how a traditional city home can be renovated for environmentally sustainable living.
This Capital Improvement Plan presents the Chicago Park District’s forecast for facility improvements over the next five years. Each project was selected through careful consideration and with valuable input from advisory councils and other community stakeholders. Through our long-term plan and commitment to enhance the quality of life throughout Chicago, we will continue to provide excellent recreation opportunities, beautifully maintained facilities, and a customer focused and responsive park system.
Thank you.
